I've ticked the "Notify me of replies by default" box on the "board preferences" section of the User Control Panel, but I'm still having to tick the "Notify me when a reply is posted box" on a lot of threads to ensure I get said notification. What's up widdat?

Hm.. that's strange.. I've just changed my profile and whenever I hit the postreply button, the little notify box is ticked for me. But if I use the edit functionality, the notify me box is not ticked...
Guess is a fault with the phpbb board itself.

DC, it works for me so I don't know what's going on. Try unchecking that setting, saving, then rechecking. Maybe there's a glitch in the system.
For another long shot, try going to the User Control Panel:
Board Preferences » Edit Global Settings » Administrators can email me information » Set to Yes
This might help. From the admin side, all the settings allow for the automatic notifications.

I think I've figured out what's going on.
If I hit the "Post Reply" button on the thread, then everything works just fine. But if I type a response in the quick reply box at the bottom and then hit "preview", then the "notify me..." box is un-ticked.
Must just be the way the phpbb board itself works.
