What can you tell from a person's eyes? Mainly I ask because INFs are so apt to comment on each other's favourite trait.

This thread doesn't have much to do with my own answer. Sometimes I can read people in a certain way. Other times: forget it.

I can sometimes tell if people are sleeping just from looking at their eyes. I know, it IS amazing!

Other than that, I dont think I can tell much reliably except maybe a very general "this person is OK". I've been fooled enough to know how little I know. With people of certain cultural backgrounds I cant tell a darn thing.

I think you can pick up little physical clues about what people are thinking from their eyes (or perhaps more accurately: how people feel about what they are thinking, and where their attention is), but that's about it. At least that's been my experience.

Interesting question, Flux.

Pretty much the same with me, although I'm not sure how much it has to do with the eyes. For me it tends to be an overall question. And, like you sometimes my initial impression holds and seems correct, and sometimes my initial impression, after time, appears to be totally off-base.

Does success depend on the reader, or the one being read?

To me, eyes communicate a person's opinion at the time, like when people roll their eyes or widen them or glare. Other than that, eyes are overrated.

More so than any other facial feature, the eyes express. I mean, your nose doesn't do much, aside from a wrinkle or nostril flare. The mouth smiles and frowns and twists, but that's more easily feigned. The eyes show the most truthful feeling.

I've actually been thinking about this recently. I think in some way that the eyes are the mirrors of the soul. And for the last few months, maybe a year or so I've thought about a few occasions that have brought these thoughts up. In these occasions I've felt that in these rare moments when I look at people, usually when I catch a glimpse at them, maybe say at a party or something. I catch a glimpse of them looking at me with these very thoughtful(literally) eyes and when that happens I feel like I'm looking into an eternal well of swirling feelings and I can just see right through their eyes their state of mind. Not of course what they're thinking but definitely the direction of what they are feeling. I'm still quite young so I guess I haven't had that much practice but I do feel when this happens that I'm truly alive and it makes me a happy little soul that I have the capacity to "communicate" in such ways.

I'm very tired atm so apologies for the confusing text, if it is.

EDIT: My first post YAYS! :waggle:

I also agree, I think the eyes have the potential to show quite a lot, but often don't. A lot of the time I look at people their eyes look fairly ordinary, but some of them can leave me with a very distinct impression. I notice some kinds of people have very wide or expressive eyes, almost enthusiastic, and I often feel they are of an excitable disposition, frequently youthful in spirit if not in body. Some people have quite an assertive look, wearing their presence on the front of their consciousness as it were, and I know they are the confident kinds of people who would probably feel comfortable in authoritative or managerial roles, and know what they want out of life (and don't take sh*t from people).

Still other kinds of eyes are rather more pensive, and seem to hide almost a wellspring of thought, feeling and emotion... though it is very rare I come across these, they remind me of the traditional NF archetype. I watched a program called the Secret Millionaire lastnight, which is as it suggests where a successful businessman goes undercover to investigate different charities to see who he can help best with a monetary donation after a period of one week. It was of a person called David Jamilly, and I have to say, as I saw him heading off to his new accommodation on the train, and even when he went off to look at the sea sometimes, to digest everything he was experiencing, I saw a certain look in his eyes, some incommunicable depth, and combined with the content of the show I swear to God I could have started crying just from that look of his. I'm made to wonder how and why he got into business and become so successful, as he admitted he did it primarily for the money, but he seemed so touched by the experience. It was a refreshing change from the usually judgmental and sanctimonious types who prattle on about the unemployed and financially deprived before the start of their experience.

I've never understood how you could read things in eyes. Is it the eye itself, or the position of the eye in the face around it?

All I know is that I find eye contact almost painful and embarrassing. To me, it feels like you're viewing all of that person when you make eye contact, as if they were naked. And it feels aggressive as well, and I'm not sure why. There is something terrifying about eyes to me.

I still haven't been able to write a reply to this......even though I do have some views about it.

But I found this link I thought was interesting http://www.timeenoughforlove.org/Eye.htm (not related to anything I was going to post about though)

I look into people's eyes when I sense that their non-verbals are not aligning with what they are saying. So I know if they're hiding something from me, and my tendency is to question them until they give it up.

That link was pretty interesting, Narik. I noticed that I was able to describe my future plans fairly accurately when looking to the down left as well as the upper right, but while describing many of my bedroom's more intricate details was easy looking to the bottom left, doing so while looking up and to the right was nigh on impossible (all I managed to get is that 'there's like, a bed in it, and a computer as well'). I've often noticed that I look away from people while I am struggling to find words in a conversation, and read that it is a telltale sign of right-brain dominant people deferring to their other hemisphere. However, as I am also prone to looking to the right as well as the left, I'm not sure whether that has any basis in fact...

Yes, that was an interesting link! I do look up to my right quite a lot when I'm problem-solving. I think I'll experiment with my family members and surprise them with this. ]:)~

That is a very cool link.

I look up and to the right and left a lot. That makes me NT. ;)

Yeah, that is really awesome. I haven't tested it yet, but I always seem to look up to the bottom and top left when I do stuff. But I gravitate towards the left with everything :D

For me, it works in different ways. Sometimes the eyes tell all, others...

Well, the dead harbor many secrets.
