I've heard about people who do this, live without TV and Internet.
I find that idea appealing. Think about how much activities you would have had done, and how much more healthy it would be. Anyone tried this?
I'll think I'll try that next week, see how long it takes before the tics arrive.

I did this along with reading deprivation while doing The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. Definitely an eye-opening experience! Great good luck with it.

i don't watch tv anyways, but i imagine it would be difficult to go long periods without internet access. even if i don't spend that much time actively browsing, its my main connection to the outside world via podcasts and my main social outlet via aim and facebook. i feel lost without it.
reading deprivation on top of that would just be torture, i imagine. i think after a point my brain would turn on itself in a fit of boredom and i would start driving myself mad. theres only so much time in a day i can spend walking around in nature or whatever lol. i guess i am thoroughly modern.

I lived without TV for several years in the 1980s. I worked long hours in my job, read much more than I do now. and listened to the radio and music. Also went cycling.

I cut down on the amount of TV I watched a couple of years ago (stopped watching re-runs, probably doubled the amount of free time I had), might cut down some more in time (there are fluff shows I watch that I enjoy, but that I have to admit are probably not the best use of my time). I couldn't do without the internet though, for practical reasons of the bill-paying/stuff buying/bank account managing variety if nothing else, but it's also how I keep in touch with such fine peoples as yourselves.

Well, it *was* hard. The idea was to listen to yourself and not all the external input. I wrote a lot which was great but it was a long week. The hardest part for me was not checking e-mail.
Try it for a day and see for yourself.

Granted myself an hour of media-celebacy today. I felt rejuvenated afterwards, I will do this more often now.
Like that song, "don't just do something, sit around instead"

I'm seconding Belle Morte and DefectiveCreative. As a person with friends, internet is my #1 communication device, considering I have friends living around the world. And as a student, I receive emails from my professors about assignments and procedures, emails from the administration about things I need to pay for and important events and internships. Internet has become a practical life necessity for most first world people (and alot of non-first worlders).
None of this of course means that I shouldn't try to cut down on my intake of random pointless Youtube videos (i.e. cats falling off of stuff). I should definitely do that.

Now why would you want to do that? you know if you provide a market for it people will start shoving cats off of things and otherwise abusing them just to get amusing videos out of it. stop cat abuse! boycott adorable kitty videos!

Not using the internet would be very hard for me, I do think it could be quite an eye opening experience and may be quite refreshing. I'm not sure I could do it though.

Internet drags out alot of my time. Some days I can sit for around 6 hours in front of the screen, so perhaps I need this experience more then people who say spend an half hour to catch up with friends on facebook or pay some bills.
I've read theories that the reason we get fatter in our part of the world is not because we eat more, but because we do less. They backed up this theory with statistic on food consumption now and in the fifthies and how people consumed more calories then, but at the same time they where much more activated.

i've had a tv for maybe two out of the last six years and not in the last two. i need the internet... that's where i do most of my socializing. if i didn't have internet, i'd have to hang around people more often and spend money on that which would be bad because i'm broke and it's exhausting.

hello - new here I have never owned a TV since living independently, except for 6 months where I was living in a flat with two other girls who drove me mad with Jeremy Kyle and Hollyoaks (okay so there is something appealing about both but for some reason the idea of being hooked to a TV show makes me feel physically sick). I am afraid of being "brainwashed" by TV and losing my ability to make my own moral decisions. I also get this weird vacant feeling after watching it which I don't like. There are exceptions - I like films which inspire me or move me or open my eyes to things I didn't know about before - and films like that are generally hard to find. I like some documentaries, too, depending on subject matter. I feel differently about the internet because I feel I have more choice over what I research/click on. It's a bit of a lifeline for me, too, as I use it so much to connect with others. I find internet much easier than phoning, and can express things so much better in writing than by talking!
